This 2 day workshop will cover all the stages of Alla Prima painting (Alla Prima means ‘In one go’) from start to finish with an emphasis on ways to achieve the best idea possible based on your subject at hand.

On day one you will explore various ideas and composition possibilities from your photo references. This will be followed by a small study of your best idea. On day two you will work on a larger canvas to reinforce and build upon your study. At the start of each day, David will demonstrate the ideas that you will be asked to incorporate in your work.

Think of this workshop as a means of letting yourself explore, discover and make personal breakthroughs. You will learn how to interpret photos and not copy them.

You will learn how to make changes based on the truths found in nature and how to fill your paintings with a sense of light and atmosphere. Composition, color, values, line and edges will all be discussed. You will learn not only the valuable tools that will help you to interpret a photo but you will explore how to engage more deeply in the painting process in order to make confident brushstrokes that are expressive and uniquely your own. David will provide photo references for this workshop.
