Painting Greens

In this three day workshop, I will teach you how to take the guesswork out of mixing greens. Green is a color that abounds in landscape painting and it’s the color that confuses the most. The myriad of greens in a spring and summer landscape especially intimidates the plein air painter, but there is a simple way to approach color mixing that will give your paintings uniformity while also allowing for variety.

On day one we will delve into a conversation about the use of greens with a detailed explanation and demonstration of how spatial planes help you to decide which colors to reach for on your palette. Armed with this knowledge, you will work on a 16x20 canvas to mix up a variety of greens, learning to make them warmer and cooler as well as how to gray them or tone them down.

On day two there will be more discussion and a demonstration about how to choose the right base green for each particular painting and where to go from there. You will explore this concept in your own studio and begin to mix greens and other colors for the next days painting.

On day three we will meet for a discussion followed by individual painting time and help from me. We will hold a critique session to end the workshop.

Location: We will have Zoom meetings at various intervals each day and individual painting time in your own studio.
