We are going to run this workshop on the grounds of THE HAMILTON HOUSE in South Berwick Maine. There are plenty of good painting possibilities to explore here and plenty of space to social distance. Come out for the joy of being able to paint outdoors in a beautiful environment and for the camaraderie with other artists in a learning environment.
Our approach to this workshop will be all about getting you ready for entering a quick draw or plein air competition event with new found speed and confidence.
In my morning demonstrations and discussions, I will teach you what I have learned over 15 years of competing and winning at a variety of plein air events. I will discuss choosing a subject, how to simplify the process of painting and the timing of individual steps in order to finish within the 2 hour window usually allotted at quick draw events. I will also give out a handy guide for steps to think about when participating in a quick draw event.
The individual painting part of this workshop for both days will be a mock quick draw, complete with a starting and ending horn, and a friendly competitive vibe. You will then turn in your completed painting framed and ready for a group discussion about the entire experience.

More About The Hamilton House
The shipping merchant Jonathan Hamilton built his striking Georgian Mansion and national historic landmark c.1785. Situated on a bluff overlooking the Salmon Falls River made it an ideal and picturesque setting for Hamilton’s shipping business and then 100 years later, the summer retreat of Emily Tyson and her step daughter Elise. From a painters stand point, this property has everything going for it. There are wonderful views of the mansion from every conceivable vantage point, views of the river, rolling hills and trees and lovely and well maintained gardens. There are always numerous varieties of flowers in bloom here throughout the summer. There are a number of out buildings on the property too, that make for a grand assortment of other compositional ideas. Hildegard Hawthorne, the writer and grand daughter of Nathaniel Hawthorne, said about this property in 1910: “It is all one harmony, house and grounds and human spirit.” Read more about The Hamilton House here.
